Monsters could be harder like Azebu suggested, but yield more loot. Bosses could become harder but have an increased drop rate. New area's only become available during night / day. New arena maps dedicated to night / day. Change in scenery ( eg. lit torches on roads during night, firefly's instead of rabbits ect.. ) ect.. ect.. And it doesn't have to be darker by much, they could install a fairly bright moonlight.
