Introduction

Update 12.6 marked the introduction of guild raids. The system is simple. Each guild can participate and fight a raid boss with gradually increasing difficulties. The guilds with the fastest times and/or higher levels reached, will get more rewards. The rewards are very high-end, hence this is the most competitive PvE content that Warspear offers. For this reason, every member of the guild matters, because in the end, it might come down to mere seconds!
And because every member matters, in this guide, I will be giving you a set of general instructions that could be relevant for everyone, then, specific tips for Paladins to make sure that you contribute to your guild as much as possible. I will be going over the class's strengths, and how to utilize the most out of every aspect of the game - gears, talents, buffs, and so on. Because again, Every. Detail. Matters! Finally, I'll briefly go over the 2 permanent guild raids that we have currently in the game to help you familiarize yourself with the mechanics.

Even the top guilds will have members that are not playing perfectly or maybe not getting the most of their class as possible. And if it's the case that for - out of all classes - A Paladin, it will have major consequences to the guild's results. Because in my opinion, Paladin is arguably the most important guild support for Sentinels.

Even beyond that, since I'll include some general tips, this guide can be a starting point for those guilds who are not competing in the top but might not be realizing their fullest potential and could maybe at least improve their standings, and maybe one day they can also compete for the top ranks.

In short: This guide is for Paladins in guild raids, and for guilds/players that don't realize the power of having Paladins in the guild raids.

Paladin is a class under appreciated by many because of its lack of damage burst potential, but it can deal damage as much as mage and heal as much as priest in team fight or dungeon.

Most used expert skill Sacred Shield, Least used expert skill Sun seal.

Paladin's power lies in his abilities to support and amplify his team mates or control enemies. He is feared by his enemies in arena and close combat fights, having heal and aggro skills makes him the best tank to out aggro any other class in game. Jumping into fights and support his team mates in wars while silencing enemies with Fetter.

This guide is made for high level paladins mostly so i will show maxed set of gears and weapons to be used.

We are not going to discuss what each skill does, but how each skill can be used effectively, tips and tricks of paladin, if you want simple description of each skill you can read them in game or on forum they are available to anyone, because lets be honest not all cares about % of this and that, what your really care about is what is the best for some type of situation without having to read a page full of numbers and %, will add full description of each skill details in the end of the guide if any requests for it.

Magical Toughening skill book - increases magical defense of the character by 20% and decreases incoming magical damage to a character from an auto attack by 10% when the current health is lowered to 30% when compared to the maximum

Physical Toughening skill book - increases physical defense of the character by 20% and decreases incoming physical damage to a character from an auto attack by 10% when the current health is lowered to 30% when compared to the maximum

Power of Life skill book - increases character's maximum health by 6% and health regeneration by 15%

Magical Protection skill book - increases numerical value of character's magical defense by 10%

The Power of Blood skill book - increases character's and all party members' "steal health" parameter by 10% when party's combined health level is less than 50%

Paladin can be Tank, Support, Healer, Crowd Control, Stunner, Silencer and Damage amplifier Hero. I'm going to show you in this summary what cool paladin stats he can have and can reach things beyond your imagination.

I recently I got to play with 1st Paladin Branch, Reckoning, and while testing it out, I gotta say, initially, I wasn't impressed by the damage that the branch seems to advertise. After all, it does say in its description that it provides "combat power that brings fear into the hearts of their enemies". But after testing it in reality, it got me thinking, how much damage does it really do in the grand scheme of things.

Since we can't make conclusions based on our feelings, in this topic I'd like to examine the damage contribution of this branch to the overall Paladin damage and compare it to all magical Paladin damage sources and multipliers/buffers.

This includes the following parameters:
- Reckoning branch +15% magical power
- Reckoning branch DoT (Damage over time)

- Sacred Shield talent "Sacred Teaching" +15% damage buff

- Harad's Banner damage + 25% damage buff

- Harad's Call

- Sun Seal

- Paladin's Prayer

- Purifying DoT

This will accomplish two things: 1) Not only we can have an objective, mathematical view to the effectiveness of this branch in providing damage to the Paladin, but also 2) it gives aspiring Paladins an idea of their damage skills, and what to prioritize in using and leveling up, if they want to maximize their damage output.

Methods

You can skip to the results if you don't care about how I generated the data.

To make things simple, yet representative, I went to solo Spawn. This boss has 1.5m HP, I recorded the fight, and I went back and looked at how many times the DoT debuff "Faith Reckoning" activated and other damage skills were used. Then, I did some maths to calculate much damage each skill contributed to. Additionally, I was able to computationally determine the amount of damage that accounts for the 15% additional magical buff from the last talent.

Basic paramters

First of all, some basic parameters that go into the calculations (Figure 1). The total damage dealt killing Spawn is obviously, Spawn's HP of 1.5M. The total amount of time spent to kill it was about 11 minutes and 20 seconds. The DPS was also calculated. Crit Damage is x2 of a normal hit + the Critical Hit Strength stat that you have, since I have 20.5%, the final multiplier would be x2,205. The magic values were taken from the game with or without the mentioned modifiers (Figure 1). Finally, since I had 51% Critical Hit, all damage numbers were simulated with 50% critical hit rate, so I multiplied half of the hits by the Crit Damage multipliers.

Data collection

Here, you kind of need to trust me that I didn't prioritize using or not using certain skills deliberately. Even though, not all skills were used immediately when off cooldown. This could be for several reasons. 1) There are many skills off cooldown at once, here we prioritize skills that hit harder or buff up the next attacks, for example Banner always first. 2) Getting Fear'd by Spawn, after that, typically, I would prioritize jump or banner. 3) Getting a combo, I would not waste Purifying before I try to use Fetters first to get the DoT. That being said, I did not play it perfectly, I did not want to even, I wanted to rather capture an "average" fight, that is not being meticulously played to optimize the damage out of every move. Even the skill build is not a perfect damage dealer build, it's rather a balanced defensive/support damage build that I can recommend for end-game content (Figure 2).

Different aspects were collected differently depending on the quickest and most representative ways. For the easy to count damage skills, I counted how many times I used the skills throughout the fight (Figure 3A). I didn't bother counting how many times I proc'd a critical version the Paladin's Prayer, so I just assumed that half of them were critical since my Critical Hit is 51%. I wrote down the damage multipliers for each skill. Of note, Harad's Call and Sun Seal have an additional 8% from the Reckoning branch. For Harad's Banner, I accounted for an average of 9 hits on Spawn (10 is max on a single target, but since the mobs eventually come in, it gets reduced sometimes). The same was done DoT procs from Reckoning branch and Fetters of Justice + Purifying. Here I additionally multiplied the number of ticks by the multipliers 4*25% and 3*36%, respectively (Figure 3B). To complete all damage sources, I also counted how many auto attacks and Purifyings were done in 1 minute and multiplied that by 11 (11 minutes total fight length) to estimate the total number of hits without having to sit through and count every hit (Figure 3C).

Finally, to calculate damage buffers' contributions, I calculated an uptime for Banner, this means the % of time where Banner is active on field. For this I multiplied its duration of 12 seconds by the number of usages (12*31), giving us 372 seconds, which is about 55% of the entire fight.

!Note: Banner's own damage is always buffed by the 25% buff (unless resisted of course). Therefore, for Banner's damage I separately calculated it with 100% uptime.

For Sacred Shield's additional 15% damage, I estimated an uptime of 50%, this is purely an estimate according to me watching back the recorded fight. In reality this could have been +-10%, but such variation won't be of any significance at the end. As for Rage, I measured the time I had the buff on for 5 minutes of the fight to end up with about 75% of the time being under Rage, which itself, adds about 6% damage to skills (since in my case it added 6% magic overall). Finally, the additional 15% magic was accounted for. For this, simply, I saw how much did the magic value increase by +15% magical power (of the raw magic), and it ended up increasing my magic from 1074 to 1186, which is about 10% damage increase for 100% of the time.

Now, all we need to do is calculate the damage that is be expected from each skill with these mentioned parameters!

Results

But who likes to look at numbers only? Here is also a visual representation:

Take your time, take all these numbers in, and let's talk about it:

1. Banner - The ultimate offensive skill!

Calculating the damage dealt by each skill by how many times they were used, we can see that for example Banner dealt 21% of the damage on its own, this is by far the biggest portion of damage of any damage source. Additionally, Banner. buffing damage dealt by 25% for about 55% of the fight, also contributes to an additional 14% damage. totaling up to a remarkable 35% of the total damage of a magic Paladin!

In comparison, Harad's Call, Sun Seal, and Paladin's Prayer did 11%, 6%, and 7% of the total damage, respectively. But it is important to note the # of usages, and their proportion to their cooldowns. I calculated a "Spam factor". Which basically means how efficient I was in "spamming" the skills. In other words, what is the amount of time wasted when the skill was ready to use but I didn't use it. 100% spam factor means I would immediately use the skill all the time as soon as it is off cooldown. Using this factor I can also calculate how the damage would look like with "100% spam factor" (corrected DMG):

Even though all skills having 100% spam factor is unrealistic, this gives you an idea on the damage potential of each skill if I spammed them equally.

Regardless, it is still not a completely fair comparison because all skills except Sun Seal are 4/4. If maxed, Sun Seal would have contributed to 8% of the total damage (15% corrected), which would be the 2nd highest damage skill for Paladin. But obviously, only on a single target, that's why I don't level it up.

2. Reckoning - Does it really bring the heat?

The main reason why I even wanted to look into this was to see how good is Faith Reckoning's damage potential, specifically the last talent. According to my data, it does contribute to a significant amount of damage. The DoT alone did slightly over 10% of the damage. If we count every hit that could trigger a Reckoning Proc that is: Banner x9, Call, Seal, Purifying, and Purifying DoT x3 (yes they can trigger it; and I don't know why Prayer hits don't seem to trigger it), that counted/calculated in my model, and use that to calculate the probability of Reckoning procs, I ended up with about 19%, which is on par with the 20% described. So, on average, it triggered every 7.5 seconds, dealing pretty much 100% of the magic over 8 seconds each time. To put it into perspective, Harad's Call (178%) was used at a rate of about once every 14.5 seconds. Thus, it is not a surprise that they both did almost the same amount of damage.

But we should also not forget that it also adds 15% magical power, which in my fight, contributed to about 7% of the total damage. In comparison, Rage, which added 10% power (phyiscal and magical!) for about 75% of the fight, only contributed to 4% of the total damage. In total, The last talent of the branch adds to about 18% of the Paladin's damage, which is the second highest damage contribution after Banner!

Next, I wanted to see how does Reckoning contribute to AoE damage, and since it would be very time consuming to count Reckoning procs on multiple targets, I just did a purely mathematical simulation based on my results, since I know that the data that I have is pretty accurate.

 I won't bore you with the details, but here is an overview of the calculations if you want to check it for yourself:

First of all, Reckoning would increase the average magical Paladin's damage output (including single target damage and AoE) by almost 40%! This includes 27% from the DoT alone (52508 = 100%), the rest is from the +15% additional magic power:

If we look at the damage distribution of the 3 offensive abilities over the increased number of targets, we see that while Banner becomes relatively less effective, and Call becomes relatively more effective, the Reckoning DoT remains more constant:

3. Physical Damage is not very negligible for magical Paladin

You would think that physical damage is not meaningful for the magical Paladin, but these data show that it deals more than 15% of total damage. Additionally, Purifying can trigger a magical damage DoT, both of which can trigger magical Reckoning DoT.

But also, it is important to note that it is only 10-15% damage, that means in cases of potentially receiving heavy damage from melees, it might be worth to keep your distance, sacrifice this 10-15% damage and stay alive. This is more for PvP, as a magical Paladin, I would not recommend staying in melee range of other melees for extended periods of time.

It would be interesting to compare this ratio of phyiscal to magical damage with a one-handed magic mace + shield.

Conclusion

Important! Limitations of this analysis

Even thought this method provided a pretty accurate representation damage distribution in my fight against Spawn with less than 5% error margin, it still is only representative of soloing a boss, be it Spawn or any other boss/mini-boss. Because it is based a fight of "spamming" skills, apart from short interruptions by Spawns fears. 

The simplicity of this model brings a couple of consequences, few examples include: 

1. This does not factor in AoE which disadvantages Banner, Call, and Reckoning DoT that also applies on these two AoE hits. The latter would markedly have an increased activation rate, when for example Banner hits 5 targets 6 times (30x hits vs 9 hits here).

2. The Solo aspect disadvantages Paladin's Prayer, which contributes to more damage with bigger party sizes. 

3. Skill build is not "fair" for all damage skills measured here (e.g. Sun Seal)

4. The way damage buffers were calculated is not very optimal, I assumed that all skills are being buffed equally, when that is not true. Also an uptime of Sacred Shield of 40% is very variable. Sometimes, you don't receive much damage so it is 100%, and sometimes it gets destroyed before you get to do more than 1-2 hits. This varies Shield's contribution from from 0% to 15% each usage depending on the fight's nature.

5. Purifiying DoT is the lowest damage (2%), but, this a boss fight, where Fetter's of Justice is mostly resisted.

6. The AoE simulation for Reckoning has a major flaw: It assumes 100% of the Reckoning damage is dealt, and that mobs don't die over the period of the DoT (Same for Banner)

Summary and overall review of the branch

Here, I wanted to answer the question. Does Reckoning actually add any significant damage the Paladin's current damage?

The question of whether or not this branch is good for in relation to game's current meta, i.e. when comparing to the environment and other classes is NOT addressed in this work, for that we'd need to compare with other skills/classes. The question of balance is also NOT addressed. 

With this work we can mainly get out with this conclusion for the Reckoning branch: Reckoning Branch is arguably the second best offensive aspect of magical Paladin. It's contribution is comparable with a maxed out Harad's Call. However, one big flaw is that the damage is dealt over a relatively long period of 8 seconds, which means the damage could be wasted.

Side conclusions:

1. This should not be a surprise for anyone, Banner is the best offensive skill for Paladin by a large margin. Must 4/4! 

2. Prayer, Seal, and Call have an equal damage distribution potential of about 15% each (on a single target)

3. Perhaps another interesting result here is that Sun Seal might need a buff. Sun Seal does not deal significantly more magical damage than the AoE skills Harad's Call and Paladin's Prayer (Not AoE but ally buffing) even on a single target level to justify leveling it up, nor is the healing effect good or better than the effects of Call and Prayer beyond the single target damage anyway. But that's off-topic!

So, does it add to the Paladin's damage? Yes, depending on how you look at it, theoretically it can add from 20% and up to 40% more damage. The question whether this addition of Paladin's magical damage (which is already pretty low) of any practical significance in the grand scheme of things. Overall, I'm happy with the amount of damage I can deal whilst being this tanky and support-y. Because, of course, this is not the only aspect that this branch offers. Everburning Candle (Aura's talent) is a very strong defensive support talent that was not the focus of my work. It would be interesting for the future to do a breakdown of the defensive contribution and compare it with the Bulwark of Faith branch as well as the damage potential of Holy Warrior to see if overall, this branch is well worth the investment.

That being said, I do think the branch does serve a purpose, and I don't think Paladin itself in its current form deserves to deal too much more damage than it currently can do with this branch, perhaps if the damage from Reckoning was a bit more immediate, or if it had an additional damage support aspect to the party like the Priest's Valor Aura talent, it would more fitting to branch's advertisement of the offensive capability in the description.

As an extension to my Comprehensive Paladin Guide, in this topic, I'll be comparing Paladin's defensive skills and their pros and cons for each situation. The goal is give an idea on how effective each of those skills and which ones are the best, if you had to choose to level one or two of them, since there is not enough skill points to level all of them. And everything is backed with evidence and numbers! 

We're talking about the skills Sacred Shield, Light Defense, and Inner Forces.

For a while I disregarded Light Defense as a mostly useless skill that is only useful in larger fights like 5v5 arena or GvG/wars. Most Paladins prefer Sacred Shield and Inner Forces when they want to be tankier, Light Defense isn't usually the first choice when it comes to using skill points. Now, let me get it out of the way and say that Sacred Shield IS the best defensive skill for Paladins, hands down, I don't need to make an analysis for that. But in this topic I'll be rather comparing Light Defense and Inner Forces in reference to Sacred Shield.

Methods

It's a little hard to exactly quantify the efficacy of Light Defense and Inner Forces, as opposed to Sacred Shield. Sacred Shield gives you a fixed amount of damage absorption per usage and a defined CD, it will always be 80% (talent - 86%) of your max HP per X seconds (Cooldown), hence why it's also easy to use Sacred Shield as a reference point.

For example, your Sacred Shield has a CD of 25 seconds, each time it protects, let's say 5k damage, that simply equals to 5k damage reduction per 25 seconds or per 1 usage, and that's always gonna be the case, as long as your HP and Cooldown are constant.

But how do we quantify Inner Forces when it's passive and the reduction is based off your HP lost? And how do we quantify Light Defense when it's also basically passive due to the usage duration being basically permanent?

I'll be presenting 2 basic methods that can approximately gives us an idea about the average efficacy of each skill. The first method is going to represent damage reduction over a defined period of time as a variable in a completely hypothetical scenario based purely on math. And the second method is based on numbers collected from an in game test, where the Paladin receives damage over time till death, and the average damage reduction is calculated.

Method 1: Pure Math

To simulate the damage received, I used a self-made calculator that is pretty accurate to real in-game values with very minimal deviations (0.001% - 0.005%)

When applying Light Defense, I only need to just the defense value and get the new damage received.

However, it's tricky to apply Inner Forces (IF), since the value of reduction varies depending on the HP lost, so we have to either take different HP points and compare it to Light Defense (LD) at each point or take an average of 50% HP and see how much reduction that gives us, or both!

As for calculating with IF (Same goes for Mermen damage reduction), all we need to input is the amount of damage reduction in %. The way to calculate it for IF is the following: Say we want to figure out IF's power at 60% HP and lvl 4/4, we'd need to calculate how many 6%'s are there in the remaining 40% HP. That is 40 / 6 = 6.67, but the game doesn't count the numbers after the decimals so we have 6 "ticks of 6% HP lost", each 6% gives us 2% damage reduction, this means IF would reduce a total of 12% of the incoming damage at 60% HP, 16% at 50% HP, and so on...

Now that we have a working damage simulator, all we need are variables such as time, amount of hits, or number of skill usages.

The best way to evaluate the effective duration of a passive (i.e. IF) or a quasi passive (i.e. LD) skill is to calculate efficiency over a given period of time. But we also need to think about how much damage would we receive in that amount of time, this could very well vary from 0 damage per second to 2000 damage per second or even more! This is why a damage simulator comes in handy, this way, we can multiple the damage by a given amount of hits that we could arbitrarily assume would be dealt during that time.

For example, we want to see how much damage reduction does LD gives us in 1 minute when we are being hit 1 time per second, that is basically 60 hits * amount of damage that we calculated once with and once without applying the bonus from LD.

Method 2: In-Game Test

In this method, a Bladedancer with 1749 phyiscal damage, 48.9% Ferocity, 21.3% Penetration, and 2% Attack Strength was used to attack an idle Paladin with 47.8% Defense and 42.4% Resilience with only auto-attacks until the Paladin was dead. The damage values on each hit were recorded for each condition. The following conditions were applied:

- Inner Forces level 1/4, and Light Defense level 4/4 (With and without Mermen)

- Only Inner Forces (With and without Mermen)

Inner Forces level 4/4, and Light Defense level 1/4 was not evaluated because I felt that lvl1 LD is not something that most Paladins go out of their way to activate and keep active, especially if not using the respective talent. And with maxed out IF, its talent "External Influence" is more likely to be used. Additionally, in an intense battle, there are higher priorities than to keep a buff of 10% defense active!

The evaluation after that is pretty simple, the total damage received was added, from that, the damage reduced in proportion was calculated.

Results

Method 1: Pure Math

Light Defense

First of all, let's take a look at Light Defense at work on its own.

Since, the amount of defense in the calculator needs to be in %, we first need to know how much defense we need to input. If you don't have the defense values in game. You can use this calculator by mixing gears to figure out the % for your desired defense value.

Here we see that a 4/4 LD reduces the incoming damage from 1125 to 1010, which is approximately 10% damage reduction.

To see how much damage exactly was reduced, we just multiply the damage by a number of hits. This 20 hits could be done in 30 seconds (750 damage per second)

As a comparison, the efficacy of LD was also evaluated using mace + shield, and as you can see from figure 7, LD becomes less effective with higher defense, this is obviously due to the fact that defense % damage protection decreases with increased defense value.

It's worth mentioning that, changing around certain values (Resilience, Ferocity, Attack Strength, Phyiscal Damage) except Penetration did not affect the % damage reduction (Data not shown).

Light Defense vs Sacred Shield

To figure out the relative defensive power of LD, Sacred Shield's (SS) power was used to compare the two.

In order to simply do that, the following hypothetical scenario was set:

- Battle lasts 1 minute (t = 60 s)

- Incoming damage is represented as 1 attack per second

- Opponent has a Phyiscal power of 1749, Penetration of 21,3%, Ferocity of 48,9%, and Attack Strength of 2%

- Paladin is being healed

- Sacred Shield was able to be used as soon as it is available with 25 seconds CD (40% Cooldown), thus SS was used 3 times during battle. (Time points t = 0s, t = 25s, and t = 50s)

- Case 1 - No Mermen: Paladin has an HP of 7004 (86% -> Shield power = 6023), Defense of 5971 (47,8%), and Resilience of 42,4%

- Case 2 - Mermen: Paladin gets an HP of 8236 (86% -> 7083 shield power); For simplicity's sake, the battle starts with x5 Mermen buffs

First we need to figure out how much damage the shield is receiving per hit, since we know that shields don't take Defense, Ferocity, and Resilience into consideration:

Case 1:

The % damage reduction for Sacred Shield was calculated from the total damage reduced highlighted in yellow (11394) divided by the total damage received without Light Defense (67500). Without LD, because we are comparing Sacred Shield vs LD on their own!

Case 2:

LD has around 10% damage reduction in both cases, while SS has more 50% more damage reduction. Additionally, SS becomes more effective (almost x2 stronger than LD) with Mermen due to the max. HP increase, however, Mermen doesn't seem to affect LD significantly.

From these numbers, it might be surprising that SS is only twice as strong as LD. The reason for the total % damage reduction being so close, however, is that as you can see, SS absorbs the damage from only 10-12 hits in the entire 60 seconds, thus, there is a lot of down-time where SS has no effect, where LD provides a small reduction over the entirety of the 60 seconds.

However, it is important to highlight that this simplistic hypothetical scenario disregards many things, such as controls. It's not very realistic, especially that receiving around 1000 damage per second isn't sustainable without external help and/or Paladin controlling the enemy, which would help avoid damage during the shield's downtime.

This scenario could simulate a strong boss fight, where the Paladin is the main tank.

But thanks to this calculator, we can just change the 2 inputs (amount of hits for LD, and amount of usages for SS), and see how the difference in effect between the 2 skills change for different scenarios:

As you can notice, LD has a constant % of damage reduction of around 10% in all situations. However, Sacred Shield, while having a constant damage reduction (3798 per shield), its % efficacy depends on how the maximum damage received in each scenario.

Light Defense vs Inner Forces vs Sacred Shield

Now let's add Inner Forces (IF) into the mix and compare each skill individually.

For IF, it gets a bit complicated, since we have to set an HP value for Paladin each time.

The same conditions as before apply, but additionally, we will account for Paladin at 90% HP, 75% HP, 50% HP, 35% HP, and 20% HP.

For 4/4 IF this means: 2% - 8% - 16% - 20% - 26% damage reduction, respectively.

There really should be no surprises here, IFs % damage reduction is already known - it's already predetermined by the Paladin's HP loss! This calculator translates the efficacy of LD and SS from defense increase and shield power into % damage reduction, and IF already is displayed in that way.

One Information we can acquire through this comparison is at what HP level does IF become stronger than other skills! In this case, IF is the strongest defensive skill at when the Paladin is below 50% HP (A) or below 35% HP (B). 

Keep in mind, all of these numbers consider the fact that each one of these skills is applied individually. This is important for SS and IF interaction. Because with IF, the incoming damage reduction with decreased HP will affect Sacred Shields effective power. For instance, in A, the total damage received is 67500, but if the Paladin stayed at 50% HP, the total damage would be 56700, increasing the relative power of SS.

Conclusion

In summary, Light Defense and Inner Forces provides a constant % damage reduction regardless of the total damage received. Sacred Shield gets relatively weaker, the higher the maximum damage received, and vice versa, because it holds a constant power (% of the Paladin's HP). Depending on different situations each one of these skills could be the strongest defensive skill:

Short battles or intermitted damage - Sacred Shield (Most common case)

Long battles with constant and high damage to the entire party - Light Defense (Rare - 5v5 or wars)

If the Paladin constantly drops HP - Inner Forces (mainly PvP or boss tanking)

Method 2: In-Game Test

Since IF and LD are similar in their effect, which is a (passive) damage reduction, I decided to look further into them in the hopes of seeing which one would be better to max out. So in this part, I'll be presenting results for an in-game test, that could help us assess the effectivity of each of these skills at 1/4 and 4/4.

We can see that Light Defense helps us receive less damage from the get-go. The line (below hit 5) determines the cut-off point, where the damage received with maxed IF becomes stronger than LD 4/4 and 1/4 IF. This means that the combination of LD 4/4 - IF 1/4  is in fact, better than 4/4 IF up until the Paladin is at 29% HP! (When IF provides 22% damage reduction, which is between 28.01% - 34% HP)

This information only tells us at which HP level do we receive less damage is it with maxed LD or maxed IF? To get an idea on the total reduction through all HP levels, we need to determine an average level of damage reduction:

We can see that, it total, the average damage reduction of a maxed LD is higher when accounting to all HP levels. The word "Average" is important here. For example, even though IF has a higher damage reduction on a fewer amounts of hits (only 5th - 7th hits), the reduction at that level is stronger than that of LD (up to 26% on the 7th hit!).

Keep in mind, that with IF 4/4 we are not considering using 1/4 LD, since according to my experience, it is impractical to keep using LD and keep it active since there is a lot more going on that needs to be focused on. But for the sake of completeness, I also collected data with 1/4 LD and the cut-off point becomes around 40% HP:

With Mermen, the cut-off point, where IF provides a better damage reduction increases to 38%, where IF provides 20% damage reduction (that is between 34.01% - 40% HP)

As for the average damage reduction with Mermen:

As we can see, with Mermen gear, both skills have an almost equal damage reduction of 25%, where IF is slightly stronger (25,4% IF, and 24,9% LD). It shouldn't be a surprise that with the help of Mermen gear, IF becomes more effective, since the maximum HP increase helps IF trigger faster.

Conclusion
 

This method helps us better determine which skill combination is better for an overall damage protection. As you can see, there is no definitive answer. While LD provides a better damage reduction from the beginning of the fight, that is constant till the end of it, IF starts becoming stronger only starting from 40% HP (Mermen) and 34% HP (Without Mermen).

On first sight, LD might be the better choice since it provides a better initial protection, but protection at high level of HP isn't as necessary as at low HP, where you can profit the most out of Mermen gear and relics that work better with low HP. It's also worth mentioning that IF is completely passive, while LD is a buff that could be removed by opponents! On the other hand, LD and its strong talent buff the entire party, while IF and its talent only benefit the Paladin. 

Discussion

In this topic, I discussed the power of each of the defensive skills of Paladin individually and in combination, in addition their power with or without Mermen, in the hopes of helping lower budget Paladin decide which skills are the best to make them defensively stronger.

It is very important to recognize the differences in each skill besides the fact that they provide "damage reduction".

For example, even though Light Defense is seemingly the weakest defensive skill when it is judged based on improving a single players survivability. Light Defense's talent Patronage of Light provides a very useful mana regen buff. Additionally the damage reduction applies to the entire party, this could make it the strongest skill in 5v5 arena, and GvG/War battles if the Paladin is in the party. But even on a level of a single Paladin, LD is more effective than IF till 40% HP.

In addition to that, leveling up LD makes it easier to keep the skill active if you're or your party are relying on the talent "Patronage of Light" for your mana regen. 

Inner Forces makes you stronger when you're low HP, it can absorb up to 30% damage (10% HP), it definitely can be a life saver, it is the weakest at high HP, but at that point, we don't need it do we? Additionally, it synergizes very well with Mermen gear, keeping HP level below 50% provides the Paladin with a debuff cleanse every 6.5 seconds, and, below 50% HP, IF provides at least 16% damage protection in addition to the 15% from MM. Increasing the  max. HP through mermen makes it easy to stay around 50% HP without the fear of dying fast (50% would be something like 4k-5k HP!)

Sacred Shield provides the strongest instant protection, but with a considerable down-time, but its long duration combined with the talent Sacred Teaching, can make a great damage booster for Raid Boss battles and dungeons. It's also the most effective defensively in smaller battles (2v2 or 3v3 Arena), since you can apply 2 shields at once. SS also synergizes with MM due to the max. HP increase.

There are obviously several limitations to the methods applied here, these methods are very oversimplified in comparison to a "real-life" battle, where there are many variables that could affect a skill's efficacy

Additionally, a comparison between the efficacies of LD and IF was not performed for levels between 1 and 4, it would be helpful to know if there is a "best combination" for maximum damage reduction using 2/4 and 3/4 on each of the two skills. Considering the accuracy of the damage simulator, this could be done purely computationally, as to not waste any in-game resources.

Relic - Gear Synergy

It is important to capitalize on relics through your gearing process and vice versa. Here are some examples:
