Golfers And Givers

Recommended Posts

On a brief course where no gap needs over a leash, a set of neighbors at Frisco, Tex., began getting together a couple of years ago to beverage, compete and bond.

In that order.

"I will bet you 10 dollars you can not make that putt," was a spontaneous bet one day.

"There is no gaming at Wedgewood," replied Karl Jones, filled with mock indignation. Jones includes just a small Carl Spackler in him if he does not shave for a couple of days, which makes it simpler to infuse his environment with all the"Caddyshack" soul.

Currently, eight of those men from these back-yard matches require an yearly friends excursion to play for the coveted Wedgewood Cup. The majority of them have transferred from Frisco, but the friends excursion, in its fifth season, keeps them shut. "We gather each spring around a keg of beer, a few sacks of crawfish and a condominium from the 18th hole for our three-day championship in pursuit of this Cup," explains Tim Kennedy, that delivered Golf Digest the band's itinerary.

I ambushed the Wedgewood Cup on the first tee at Pine Dunes Resort & Golf Club at Frankston, two hours southeast of Dallas. I handed out free golf balls, hats, beverages, food and a variety finder for Kennedy.

I didn't have some crawfish, but I observed the usage of Texas-size steaks, cooked by excursion planner Scott Starnes. I saw a crazy interpretation of the way to hold the club by three-time Cup winner Scott Lacy (it starts out just like two hands holding a tiny bowl and ends up an abysmal wreck, but his ball moves right ). I met eight men with a passion for coordinated outfits ( previously ). I heard about a 10:15 a.m. program of exactly what Jones called"lip balm," also called a shot of Johnnie Walker Black. I played at a closest-to-the-hole chipping competition until 3 a.m., in which the origin of light was that the large beams on a leased Hyundai. And that I watched Chuck (Pants) Melton win the Cup while sporting a pair of shorts. We can presume from his nickname and the warmth from his thighs that Chucky does not often wear shorts.

Like any of those 14 other bands I have ambushed, this one had a deeper purpose than simply playing golf and fraternizing.

A couple of years back Doug Patterson and his wife, Angela, discovered their adopted daughter, Sydney, had Angelman Syndrome, a very rare neurogenic disease which affects cognitive and motor-skill improvement. Sydney, age , has a award-winning smileshe really won a grin contestand can climb trees. Some children are not as lucky rather than leave a wheelchair.

Apart from supplying the Pattersons moral support, the Wedgewood Cuppers have contributed money to the hunt for an Angelman Syndrome treatment. This season the men delayed their trip a couple of days to adapt the Dallas-area Angelman Syndrome Foundation National Walk-a-thon, which was coordinated by Angela Patterson. A couple of men flew early, wear"Team Sydney" lanyards and engaged in the occasion.

"We love these men," states Doug, the Wedgewood Cup's inaugural winner. "Once I told Scott there are a scheduling conflict, '' he explained,'We are with you friend. We are going to figure it out' This excursion's about friendships, along with the past couple of years are a fantastic representation of this."
