June 20Jun 20 Background This story takes place in 2020. It's a story about a noble sacrifice that allowed my young mage to leave the shores of Irselnort for the vast forests of Ayvondil. At that point, I already had a level 32 death knight, but I had never truly played in any other server than the EU-Emerald. Led by my curiosity, I started leveling my low-level mage that was in the US-Sapphire server. It was like starting the game as a new player as I was completely alone in the new server. All the player and guild names there were weird to me and even the used abbreviations were different. A new character in the EU-Emerald would have the resources of older characters at hand, but in the US-Sapphire, I had nothing. Of course, I knew the game well and could proceed without too much trouble ...until I reached the Berengar's Tower. Back in the day, the enemies there were much stronger that nowadays, and there weren't too many people willing to help. Somehow, I managed to complete the easy and normal levels, but now it was time for the hard level, the only thing keeping my mage away from the lands of Ayvondil. This story is about the completion of that dreadful hard level. On the quest to defeat the Juggernaut I had already forgotten how many days I had waited. Day after day, I wandered around the Berengar's Tower and nearby towns looking for comrades who could help me with my quest. The weird guys from the Chainless League wanted me to get some trinket from the Tower, but when I visited it, I was welcomed by an endless war zone that killed me before I even noticed. My staff was better for hitting than casting and my robes couldn't protect me even from mosquito bites. I asked myself if there was any hope, but after a while, it seemed there was. Someone with a shared objective finally reached out to me and asked for collaboration. This was a good start but definitely not enough. His power wasn't far above my own, and my experience told me that our combined strength wouldn't be sufficient to break even the first line of defense inside the Tower. Thus, we had to kept waiting. Finally, a second warrior with the shared objective reached out to me, and we could form a party of three. Now there was even more hope, but I very well knew that even this wasn't enough. So hard would this quest be that even three warriors together wouldn't stand a chance against the army of the Juggernaut. Though, we were all mediocre, and we knew it. But then the miracle happened. A warrior of great power came to us and offered us a helping hand. He wasn't someone who could eradicate all the lines of enemies with a snap of fingers but still someone strong enough to take all the slashes of swords and hits by projectiles without dying. He might have been a blade dancer, but my memories have become vague. Anyhow, now I knew that the four of us could bring down the Juggernaut and give the Chainless League people whatever trinket they wanted. So began our march through the brick roads floating in the astral void that had filled the Tower. The enemies fell one by one by the swords of the blade dancer while the three of us backed him with all we had. No one could stop our advancement ...until our enemies revised their strategy. We could already see the Juggernaut, but then a group of clever enemy soldiers managed to slip behind the blade dancer. Suddenly, me and my two comrades were attacked from all sides. We fought fiercely, but... we couldn't take it for long. My staff was shattered into pieces by a strong blow from an enemy, and then I was fatally struck in the back. My soul escaped from the Tower to the most recent place I had felt safe in. There, in a nearby town, I woke up. But along with me, also one of my comrades woke up. He told me that our other comrade had barely managed to flee from the enemies and be saved by the blade dancer. This was reassuring to hear, but now we had to hurry. We reached the Tower quickly, but to our horror, there were still some enemy soldiers guarding the roads. With trickery, stealth and co-operation, we were able to pass the soldiers with only a few wounds ...until we reached the region where we died. Ahead of us, there was a squadron of enemy soldiers patrolling. It was hopeless. There was no way around them, and we were too weak to fight them. Our blade dancer was busy fighting the Juggernaut and could not help us. We were so close, but we actually weren't. We would have to accept our failure and leave the Tower empty-handed. That was until our comrade who had survived noticed us. He left the blade dancer and approached the enemy squadron alone, knowing well that he was too weak to defeat them. But his eyes had no hesitation, and he challenged the enemy squadron with all he had. This gave us a chance. Now we were able to bypass the enemies and join the blade dancer. We hoped to see our comrade to come with us, but he was overwhelmed. He tried to flee, but a blow was followed by another blow until he fell down and was finally struck dead. We were horrified, but there was nothing we could do. His soul never managed to leave the Tower, he was truly dead. Then, my survived comrade said the unforgettable words: "He will be remembered". I couldn't but agree with sadness in my eyes. The Juggernaut finally fell, and we completed the quest from the Chainless League. We were now able to sail to the docks of Maliat and start building our reputation there. Now, I have become a respected mage in the Mages' Guild of Almahad. While walking among the bazaars, I sometimes wonder what happened to the soul of my comrade who sacrificed himself. Was it lost forever in the astral void or did someone exploring the Tower find it? I may never know the truth, but one thing is for sure: he will be remembered. Spoiler This story is based on a true incident, but naturally, not every detail is supposed to be taken literally. Many parts of the story are heavily dramatized, and my memories of this incident have also become quite cloudy at this point. So, imagination was used in the parts where my memory failed.
