English 101

ok I must say, English is my second language, yet my English is better than most who ONLY speak English.

so here's a few tips that I used when growing up to learn English easier:

then/than

"then" deals with time, it looks like "when" but with a "t", "than" is for comparison

there/their

"there" deals with placing, its like "here" with a "t" in front of it. "Their" is for belongings/relativity

where/were/wear

"where" deals with placing, its like "here" with a "w" in front of it

"were" is plural and personal form of "was", looks like "we're" without apostrophy

"Wear" is something you have on, like "ear" with a "w" in front

here/hear

"Here" means current place, "hear" is what you do with your "ear" just with an "h" in front

apostrophies

they are meant to shorten words, and its placed where the missing letter(s) is/are supposed to be

Its not meant to make words plural (unless avbreviated)

ex: He's = He is

I'll = I will

R.P.G.'s = correct

Dollar's = incorrect

they can also be used to describe a subject in relation to another subject

ex: Carlito's Way = the way of Carlito

Also, the correct phrase is "Could have/should have/would have"

or "could've/should've/would've" for short

"Could of/should of/would of" is incorrect

there are a bunch of other common mistakes ppl make, but I cant remember them right now.

I'll add them later :)

because no matter how many times some people see the correct way, they still keep making the same mistakes over and over again. like they cant retain memory. so this is just to help them remember, so maybe they can finally learn.

I'm not saying anyone is perfect. Certainly not me.

It just gets annoying after a while.

here's a little more:

your/you're

"Your" means "belonging to you", its like "our" just with a "y" in front

"You're" is the abbreviated form of "you are". Just take the "a" out, apostrophy example

affect/effect

"Effect" is a noun.

ex: "the effect of gravity"

"Affect" is the verb

Ex: you cant effect something, but you can affect it

Don't be rude.

Noted.

But that's how it is. Most people here understand these basics, and those who only want to create mayhem will just ignore it.

there's a difference between shortening sentences or words and completely slaughtering the English language

no it must be dutch :dirol:

Most non-europeans don't even know it is a language on it's own. They think dutch is dialect of german  :facepalm: And a lot don't even know "dutch" in the first place  ;D You have to tell you are from the Netherlands (no not amsterdam, and we do not all use drugs!).
